Is it really so difficult to find a cigar?
I travel often. Usually for work, but also for leisure. With a busy work and family schedule my flexible time is at a premium. Besides swimming, running, and doing prettying much anything with my kids, one thing I like to make time for is a cigar. When I travel, especially for work, I tend to go somewhere for a day or two with a packed schedule.
When I am done with work and exercise I might only have an hour or two to spare, or I might want to find a place where I can read or send messages to clients, friends, and family while doing something that I enjoy. When I look for "cigars" or "zigarren" "near me" in search engines, I frequently find results where ever I am in the world but they tend to be hit-and-miss. I have also used a few other apps which tend to be either too elaborate (e.g.:must create a "profile") or with locations in only one country. When I use these tools sometimes I find a kiosk with a limited selection and sometimes I find a great shop staffed with an expert who knows not only cigars, but the city.
Experts are especially useful.
I know this- I work in Consulting. :-) The right information at the right time can make all the difference. Between unpredictable weather and smoking bans, even if I find a great cigar I might not find a place to enjoy it. Hints from locals are usually how I find the best places but this does not always provide a place to start. I needed a tool to help me go from zero-to-one in any new place.
I started hacking with a friend and mobile developer. We we tried various APIs from several cloud service providers, crawled, and NLP’d our way to reliably finding places to start looking for cigars globally and share these locations at just the right time. This is how findmycigar was born.
You can use findmycigar however you like, but keep in mind these points for now:
We do not track you. findmycigar logs information about how the app is used, and where, but it does not log your name/ID/phone, etc., with those events. Your usage is anonymous to us.
The app is made on a best-effort basis. None of us has unlimited free-time or budget to develop findmycigar so we make changes slowly and carefully. Have a suggestion? Feel free to let us know with the "contact" box at the bottom of the home page on this site!
Nothing is for sale in the app, nor do we promote any products or behaviors.
You cannot review locations or communicate with locations directly through the app. We are just providing information. We can see the value of facilitating social communication through findmycigar but moderating comments and holding potentially personal information is not something we can manage today.
Only my name and photo are listed here, but more people are involved in the development of findmycigar.
